The importance of private practice eyecare within the American healthcare system

I really value my eye doctor. I’ve been a patient at his practice for years, and I’ve learned to trust him to not only provide great care, but also to play an important role in my overall health.

He’s one of VSP’s 25,000 private practice eye doctors across the country that is specially trained to diagnose and treat eye disease and also detect early signs of serious chronic health conditions. When VSP doctors recognize potential signs of diseases like diabetes or hypertension in their patients they are particularly adept at coordinating care with physicians, which helps people manage their conditions and live healthier lives.

When I began working for VSP, I was interested to learn that 90% of diabetes-related blindness can be prevented by early detection and diligent management through regular eye exams. The facts show that millions of Americans have pre-diabetes and don’t even know it, and eye exams can be the key to identifying the threat and preventing irreparable damage from diabetes.

Private practice eye doctors serve a significant role in helping patients with diabetes manage their disease. Among the principal factors is that these doctors consistently have the longest relationships with their patients and provide the best care. This allows them to monitor for early signs of disease during annual exams, provide education on how to prevent and control diabetes, track progress and coordinate care with primary care physicians. The sound advice from independent doctors helps keep eyes healthy whether you’re living with pre-diabetes or diabetes.

With the potential to detect, treat and manage eye and chronic diseases through an annual eye exam, the opportunity is clear; annual eye exams must be an essential part of Americans’ healthcare. And private practice eye doctors are the trusted source for this care.

VSP aligns with the American Diabetes Association

I am happy to announce that this week VSP has entered into a 3 year sponsorship with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) as a National Strategic Partner.

This sponsorship is truly the next step for VSP in spreading the awareness about the importance of annual eye exams. Comprehensive eye exams can detect the signs of several chronic diseases including diabetes, in addition to serious eye conditions.

Diabetes is the leading cause of vision loss in American adults, but 90 percent of diabetes-related blindness can be avoided with annual eye exams.

Some highlights of the partnership include sponsorship of ADA Diabetes EXPOs around the country, which reaches thousands of people affected by diabetes. Our mobile eyecare clinics will provide comprehensive eye exams to low income and uninsured participants.

We’ll also host an “Ask the Eye Doctor” chat series on the ADA website addressing questions consumers have in regards to eye health, eyecare and its relation to diabetes.

This partnership is an asset to our current services for members with diabetes. We provide resources to help coordinate care, exam reminders, and educational materials.

VSP Assists Those Affected by the Southern Tornadoes

VSP’s Disaster Relief Team is responding to help those affected by the recent wave of tornadoes in the South. Similar to our work for the Southern California fires, we are working directly with our network of eye doctors and business partners to assess the situation and meet the eyecare needs of all those affected by the tornadoes.

Here’s what we are doing:

  • Any VSP member who loses or breaks eyewear, needs contact lens replacements or an eye exam due to the tornadoes, can get them replaced at a minimal cost. Please call 800.877.7195 for more information.  Non-VSP members can request a VSP eyecare voucher from the American Red Cross.
  • We’ve shipped needed eyecare supplies including eyeglass repair kits, lens cleaning cloths, and backpacks directly to the evacuated areas. We’ll distribute at evacuation centers and in various neighborhoods to families that are staying with their belongings.
  • Our mobile response team will be distributing items in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Kentucky.
  • To ensure that those most in need continue to have access to eyecare during this crisis, we’re continuing to work closely with more than 1,000 VSP doctors in Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, and related state optometric associations.

As thousands of Americans are putting the pieces back together, we’re here to help.

Doing Our Part for the Environment

VSP is “going green.” We’ve all heard about the effects of global warming on the environment, and the negative impact that businesses (and specifically buildings) can have. According to the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), 12 percent of the water used, 30 percent of the greenhouse gases produced, 65 percent of waste output and 70 percent of electricity consumption in the U.S. comes from buildings.

We’re doing our part by earning the USGBC’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design platinum level certification. When completed, VSP will be one of only a handful of buildings in California with this certification.

Our ultimate goal is to be more environmentally conscious and operate our buildings more efficiently. This also supports our ongoing focus of maintaining competitive administrative costs to allow more patients access to affordable vision care. Since September 2007 we’ve taken many steps to accomplish this, including:

  • Installing low-flow plumbing fixtures and water meters, and reducing our landscape watering by 50 percent.
  • Giving each employee a permanent water and coffee cup to eliminate the nearly 767,000 Styrofoam cups used on campus each year.
  • Installing automatic paper towel dispensers in restrooms.
  • Implementing energy upgrades and processes to monitor and reduce our energy use and carbon emissions.
  • Replacing large trash cans with smaller ones that clip onto recycling receptacles, encouraging employees to recycle more.
  • Using more products made of recycled materials.

We’re excited about these changes and how we can positively impact the environment. Please share your ideas with us and what you’re doing to “go green.”
