You can’t read a newspaper or turn on the news without getting inundated with stories about the state of the economy. Job losses, foreclosures, bailouts—all of these forces combine to increase the demand for charitable services even as giving goes down. How can we help?
VSP doctors Juan Tienda and Candice Galvan stepped up to the plate recently as they partnered with our mobile clinic program, called “Mobile Eyes,” and the East Los Angeles Lions Club to provide eyecare to underserved kids at the local Boys & Girls Club.
As a child, Dr. Tienda was a member of this Boys & Girls Club, and the support and sense of community offered by the Club stuck with him through the years. He has paid it forward by donating his time to perform comprehensive eye exams for local children who play where he once played.
The beginning of a new year is a time for resolutions. Here’s one to add to your list: repay the good deeds in your life. If finances don’t allow you to make monetary contributions, contribute in kind.
Doctors Tienda and Galvan helped 25 kids to see better—one can only imagine the heights those kids will reach with clear vision and the example of giving.
I am lucky enough to hear many, many stories about VSP doctors giving back to their own communities across the country. I applaud these efforts. Although most of your work will not make the news or be appreciated by the masses, those who do benefit from your time and commitment will always remember. In this case 25 kids in East LA will be forever grateful to Doctors Tienda and Galvan for their work on Saturday, January 10th.
