My dog ate my glasses…

I was an optician for 12 years before joining VSP and I’ve heard many reasons for broken frames and lenses.  Here are a few of my favorites.

1. I think there’s something wrong with my glasses.

My patient stands before me, squinting through glasses that are clearly askew. I can tell right off that his glasses are missing a nose pad—no wait, make that both nose pads—and the arm that holds the nose pad, and I wonder how he was able to drive to the office.

Did you know that you can visit your VSP eye doctor to change out old nose pads for shiny new ones? Over time the natural oils in your skin can turn nose pads green. Pop in and give your frames a quick, much-needed refresh just by changing the nose pads.

Eye Ride with Kyle

This past Wednesday, one of my cycling dreams came true as I received a two-wheeled escort across Golden Gate Bridge from Kyle Rose, a member of the 2009 Team Type 1 Elite/RAAM cycling team.

Having never biked across Golden Gate Bridge, let alone alongside a pro, I was stoked when Kyle offered to take me out a few hours before our scheduled video shoot of his annual eye exam (a pretty big deal since it was through an annual eye exam that the then 16-year-old Kyle discovered he had Type 1 diabetes).

Despite the thick fog and damp weather (that’s summer in the Bay for you), our ride was awesome, especially bombing down the twisting switchbacks of Hawk Hill. Thankfully for me, Kyle kept a casual pace (he had done his real training the day before) so I could pick his brain about anything and everything that came to mind: Team Type 1’s recent mountain stage victory at the Tour of Ireland; the good, the bad, and the ugly of semi-professional cycling; his favorite local rides (Hawk Hill being one); the not-so-favorite aspects of training in the Bay (i.e. tourists who come to a dead stop on their rented bikes in the bike lane); and his future (January 2010 he plans to move to France – where he was born and raised – to train and race for Team Type 1 in the European circuit).

We also talked about life beyond cycling (Kyle plans to study business while living in France) and things he’ll miss most about San Francisco. Like most good times, our ride ended much too soon. But I’ll always have my memories! And my cool helmet cam footage!

Top Ten Reasons I’m a Fan of Kyle Rose:

10. He likes to chase down and pass cars on Marine Drive.

9. He speaks French fluently.

8. He’s passionate about sharing the Team Type 1 message.

7. He thinks helmet cams are cool.

6. He isn’t afraid to get his eyes dilated (a key step in making sure your eyes are healthy).

5. He is uber-polite (didn’t even blink when I flubbed my video intro).

4. He doesn’t mind trying on tons of frames, even ones that I pick out that make him look a little nerdy (hey, I happen to think geek is chic!)

3. He knows what a figure eight knot is.

2. He agreed to my request to be pen pals while he’s in France.

And the number one reason I’m a fan of Kyle Rose: he’s a person who lives and breathes the mantra – don’t let anything stand in your way.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow

I’ve recently developed an addiction to sunwear. I’ve got a full rainbow spectrum to choose from and I have no intention of slowing down. It’s a recent obsession so I’m only at 8 pairs but the rate at which I’ve acquired them is getting a bit scary.

I have gone through accessory addictions in the past (shoes, purses, one weird phase of collecting argyle socks) but this one is turning into a dangerous one for me because a) I work in the industry so am constantly being exposed to the latest and greatest and b) I can make the argument that it’s actually for my own good: “Hellooo, the lenses are polarized, which means UV protection, which means I’m protecting my eyes…what, you don’t think my precious eyes need protection?!”

From the Road – Incredible Kids

Although I don’t have children, I am reminded in my job how incredible kids can be. Take for example, Travis, a sweet young man I met in Tampa, FL last week while I was working on the mobile clinic at an elementary school.

Travis came on board for his eye exam and learned that he needed glasses. While he was selecting his frames with one of his friends (who happened to be a little girl), I asked them “are you girls having fun selecting your frames?”

“I am a boy,” Travis said. I apologized to him and he replied “That’s OK, I get it all the time.”

Make your own customized eyechart!

As the skies turn overcast and the air has a chilly bite to it, many people tuck their sunglasses away for the oncoming winter months. Tsk, tsk, tsk!

Funnel vision

Do you have problems applying eye drops? Do you tend to miss your eye and waste several drops down your cheek?
Then, you need the funnel vision frames.

OK, these frames aren’t really available under your VSP vision care benefits. They are just one of many Chindogu creations by Japanese inventor Kenji Kawakami.

The Japanese literal translation of Chindogu is “unusual tools.” Read more »

From the road: Helping out in Florida & South Carolina

Today we have a guest blog from Tresa Dupray, a VSP Mobile Response Team member.

I’ve worked for VSP for many years and have been proud of the efforts we have made to give back to our community.  I joined the Mobile Eyes program as a Mobile Response Team member so that I could become a part of VSP’s gift of giving.  I spent the past two weeks traveling with the Mobile Clinic providing free exams and glasses to children in Tampa, FL and to the homeless in Charleston, SC.   My experience with the program has far exceeded my expectation.
