Ryan Lunquist, founder of Project 680, created a special “thank you” video to express his sincere appreciation towards VSP employees for all their hard work in raising $1,284 for this season’s shoe drive. This was done through two charity bake sales held by the Finance Department, as well as regular donations. 100% of the donations has been used to buy new Payless shoes for homeless children in the Folsom-Cordova Unified School District (FCUSD). Project 680 is a grassroots team effort to do something about student homelessness in the FCUSD. I am so proud to be a part of a group who helped make this holiday season a truly special one for these needy children!
Eyewear donations really do make a difference! Just last month more than 450 children in three Ethiopian orphanages Kolfe, Kechene and Kebebetsehay, received eye exams – many for the first time. The kids who need glasses will receive them through our Eyes of Hope Eyewear Donation program!
Dr. Arikow Woldewishmal gave eye exams to more than 450 children in three orphanages in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
After Eyes of Hope staff sorts out the prescriptions and glasses, a traveling family who is adopting an Ethiopian child will deliver the glasses to the orphanage. Look for photos of the kids receiving their glasses soon.
This was made possible through Addis Ababa-based ophthalmologist Dr. Arikew Woldemichael, Leslie Kudna, The Gladney Center for Adoption based in Fort Worth, TX and generous donations to VSP’s Eyes of Hope program by our members and providers.

Dr. Robert Mulgrew, a local VSP doctor, coordinated an event with the VSP Mobile Eye clinic to provide comprehensive eye exams and glasses to the children of the Sunnyside School District. This young man was one of our patients, and as you can see, he was in need of new glasses. The glasses he is wearing were over 2 years old and had been damaged for quite some time. After his exam, it was determined the current glasses were not even close to what his new prescription was. He was so excited to be able to pick out his own glasses, and did not need much time in selecting his new frame….he had been “eyeing” the Power Rangers frame by Marchon.
VSP Provider Dr. Elise Brisco with Hollywood Vision Center recently went on the popular TV show ”The Doctors” to explain the various causes of double vision. A great point that came out of this segment was when Dr. Travis tried to catch a ball while wearing glasses that mimic what a person with double vision may see. Because his sense of sight was compromised, he relied more on his sense of touch to catch the ball. If you notice your child, friend or family member using this technique or acting a bit clumsy, they may have double vision. Check out this clip to learn more about double vision.
A new survey from the Consumer Electronics Association reports most shoppers purchased electronics during black friday weekend. Among the selections, the most popular items were portable mp3 players, video game consoles and computers (including notebooks and tablets).
Depending on your plan, most VSP members receive a discount on LASIK eye surgery. If you are curious about LASIK or have been considering laser eye surgery, now is a perfect time to find out more information!

In attempting to sum up the world in 2010, one word comes to mind: connected. Everywhere we go we carry devices that keep us connected to something important to us. Be it a sleek new tablet letting you share photos with the person helping load your groceries, or a smartphone making sure you don’t miss that late night e-mail from a colleague; we are now constantly connected to the world around us, more than ever before.
We’ve become dependent on these digital devices to survive both professionally and personally, and with the holiday season now upon us and digital devices topping most of our gift wish lists, the amount of time we spend with these gadgets will only increase. Yet many of us forget to consider two devices we are naturally equipped with that keep us more connected to the world than anything else: our eyes. Consumers often don’t think about the impact digital devices might have on their vision, and it can be to the detriment of not just their health, but also productivity.
In an effort to help consumers keep their eye health in mind this winter while enjoying these amazing products, we’ve put together five tips for creating a vision-healthy environment for digital device usage.
