In my experience, working in customer service can be a very rewarding career. Very successful companies know that customer service is the pulse of the company. We hear first hand what our customers think about our company. We have the power to change customers perception for good or bad. You know how a company feels about its employee by the tone of the voice that answers the phone.

VSP prides itself on hiring high performing employees. It’s the reason that I choose to apply and work here. I believe that I work for one of the best companies in the world and I believe that our Customer Service is bar none, the best! This was proven on Friday when our VP of customer service, Laura Costa, announced that SQM (Service Quality Measurement) named us the 2009 Call Center of the Year and rated highest in Employee Satisfaction for the second year in a row.goldawardnew Read more »

Does The Frame Make The Man Or Woman?

Well folks it’s that time of year… time for new glasses. If you are anything like me, picking the right pair of frames is crucial. I have to find the right balance between stylish and professional and something that I can afford. Every year I feel this pressure to pick my frames and place my order right away. I decided that this year it was going to be fun. I called a couple of friends and formulated a plan. We would go look at frames together and then go to lunch. No pressure just good times with good friends.

A couple of weekends ago we put our plan to the test. We went to five offices, wrote down some styles, took a couple of pictures and laughed. Over our lunch, the conversation changed from what we had seen to how the frame that you choose is a reflection of you and or your status.

I look for style and not brands, however in contrasKarlt one of my friends will only wear a name-brand frame, this year he was predetermined to buy Karl Lagerfeld frames. When I inquired why, he explained that as an artist they project to the world that he is successful.

I am not sure how much growing up in a small Oregon town, where name brands weren’t an option has helped sculpt my personal style, however when I shop it’s more important that I like the product than who makes the product.

What do you think? Does the name on the frame make the man or woman?

I did pick out new frames… want to see? Well you will have to wait just a little while more. ;-)

Case Of The Little Black Shirt

Brian and his little black shirt

Brian B. is a member of VSP's Member Services team.

As you know from a previous post, I enjoy riding public transit every morning. I have been riding Regional Transit long enough to get to know some of the faces, but typically except for a polite, “good morning” there is not very much interaction. That changed a little this morning, when someone that I see often, walked up to me and introduced himself as “Martin.” He was compelled to talk with me because I was wearing my VSP branded t-shirt.

Over the next 15 minutes or so, Martin explained all the wonderful things he has heard about VSP. I explained what I do for VSP and what it’s like in Customer Service, a point of view that is not always heard from. I am not trying to brag, but I do feel very proud when I am able to tell people who I work for. That has not always been the case with past employers. I remind myself of this on a regular basis. He showed an interest in working for VSP and wanted to know more about the company. I offered to answer any questions that I could and I advised that job postings are listed on our company Web site. The conversation would have continued if I had not reached the building.

I cannot explain how good it feels to work for a company that inspires someone to introduce themselves to me because of a little black t-shirt.

Time To Make A Transition

Well folks, I believe that the 100 plus temperatures confirms that summer is here. I was recently spending time with a friend when I noticed his lenses had transitioned to brown. I was reminded of when I got my first pair of Transitions lenses and he made fun of me. He stated that only old people have transition lenses and that I was officially old.

At first I told him that I was not old, I was trendy. That didn’t work.

So, with my best effort I tried to explain to him all the benefits, no switching frames, Ultra Violet protection and even scratch coating – but he still said with a laugh, I was old. I finally gave up and said “you say old, I say trendy and wise.”

Well, as you can imagine when I had the chance I quickly pointed out his new lenses and asked how he liked them. He stated “I love them.”

I really wanted to take the high road and not bring up last year’s experience, but I was forced to say… “how does it feel to be trendy and wise?”

Do you have Transitions? How do you enjoy them?

Cool Commuting

Brian B. (left) is with VSP's customer care team.

Each year I challenge myself to step out of my comfort zone. Last year, I tried commuting to work on public transportation. I figured it would be my contribution to being “green”. I am still using public transportation each day. I was actually one of the first people to ride in the new Rancho Cordova Van, which drops me off right in front of the office. I love it! My goal for this year is to try and be more talkative. I am a relatively quiet person, and not the first to initiate conversation. I would like to be more comfortable doing so. I tried it this week and had surprising results.

While riding the van this week, I asked the driver how she is enjoying the new route and if she noticed any trends(this is the second week.) She told me that she has seen a few more people than last week. She said that she is dropping off a couple of people at the same stop that I use every time she makes her route. She asked where I worked. When I told her that it was VSP, her reply was. “Oh WOW! That is a great company. I only hear great things about them” I was instantly filled with pride by her response. I sat and thought about it, and a great big smile came to my face. I realized that she is dropping off my coworkers all morning long. My personal challenge helped to remind me that I work for a company that does its part for the environment and so does its employees. How cool is that?

Very Cool!!
