I’ve always loved the chic but classic styling of Michael Kors sunglasses. From streamlined aviators, like the one shown below, to oversized shades in rich colors, you’ll see that his eyewear is made from the finest materials. He uses cool textures to make the glasses visually interesting, and he has a knack for adding fine details that make his glasses stand out. They look luxurious but work for everyday use.

Whether I’m cheering on my friend’s kids in peewee football or heading downtown to root for my favorite pros, I make sure my eyes look good, feel comfortable, and will stay healthy.
Yes, I love styling up my look with the latest shades. It’s such an easy way to score fashion points! But I also know how important it is to protect my eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Hey, I put on sun block every day, so why wouldn’t I do my eyes the same favor? The effect of UV rays on the eyes is cumulative and I don’t want to have eye problems down the road.
Now, this may not be the best argument to make with your kids as they’re heading out to the next home football game. They can’t see the effects of sun damage on their eyes the way they can see what sunburn does to their skin.
But you don’t have to try and get kids to think long term! Just tell them they’ll look way cooler in the latest shades. And would they want to miss seeing the game-winning catch because they were squinting through the glare? Of course not! And while that may be their only focus, you can rest easy knowing they’re reducing their risk of damaging their corneas or developing other problems later in life, like cataracts.
Just tell them to check out the latest looks in sunwear at eyeconic.com. They can virtually try-on tons of styles, let our personal shoppers help them zero in on the best look, and find a nearby VSP doctor that carries their faves.
Who knew shopping for shades could be so good for you?
Last month we reviewed what was happening in the fashion world regarding summer eyewear trends for gals. This month, we’re checking out what some of the hot ”guywear” trends are this summer. Here’s the scoop gentlemen…
Colors: Brown, sand, gray and clear or a combo of color and clear (all about neutrals)
Style: Small round (like John Lennon), small square or rectangle (think Johnny Depp), aviator or navigator (for sunwear)
Details: Keyhole bridges, two tone and for sunwear blue or white to make an impact
So, using all the scoop gathered for both gal and guy trends, I picked out my new frames. Going with what’s happening in “guywear.” Kooky. I know, right? Selected small, square, “geek chic” look for everyday and for sun, decided on navigator (squared off aviator) in shiny silver with “flash” mirror coating (this type of mirror coating still allows others to see one’s eyes through the lenses unlike the true mirror coating that shows one’s reflection).
I can’t leave you without tossing out a tiny word of caution. Please, please, please get UV protection on your prescription eyewear and/or sunwear. Consider polycarbonate lens material, if your VSP doctor feels it’s appropriate, which inherently has UV protection and can be tinted for sunglasses.
For those of you that don’t need a prescription, and are on the prowl for new shades, look for 100% UVA/UVB protection, it’ll be noted on the lenses. Every little precaution helps lessen sun damage…talk about other UV options with your VSP doctor.
When summer’s heat arrives, do you launch your boat into the nearest body of water? At the first sight of snow, do you grab your skis and head for the mountains? Then you need to make sure a pair of polarized Nike Vision sunwear is included in your gear.
Nike MAX Polarized technology greatly reduces the bright, disruptive glare from highly reflective surfaces, like water and snow, when it can feel like you’re looking at a second sun. This optical filtering innovation prevents light at certain angles from passing through the lens to give you less squinting and better focus. Nike MAX Polarized is available for both prescription and non-prescription sunwear.
Exclusive to VSP Members As a VSP member, you can use your benefit towards prescription Nike sunwear. Interested in adding Nike MAX Polarized? Just talk to your VSP doctor.

Even with new regulations on the labeling of sunscreen products to help consumers better protect their skin, many Americans are still unaware of the sun’s damaging effects on their eyes. UVA and UVB rays can cause cataracts and macular degeneration, and are believed to cause melanomas (cancerous growths both inside and around the eyes), all of which can cause blindness. Also, UV damage is cumulative over time, so it’s never too late or too early to start protecting your eyes from the sun, especially for young children. In fact, a survey by VSP® Vision Care found that less than 30 percent of children wear sunglasses outside.
Don’t miss VSP EyeFiles Episode 2, which you can watch below or on the EyeFiles Tab.
Hi all! Been keeping tabs on what types of sunwear trends are being set by the fashion magazines, on the runways and by celebs so when you’re ready to make your selection you’ll be in the know. So let’s break it down for our gals in this month post (guys, saving you for next time) in a few simple catagories:
Colors: Bubble gum pink, crystalized reds, regal purple and "never go out of fashion" black and tortoise
Shapes: Cat-eye, oversized square or round
Style: Retro, disco, and material girl (think 50's and 60's with a splash of 70's and 80's)
Details: Crystalized, fun bling, interesting or artistic metal accents
One super important thing to mention about sunwear is to invest in a pair with 100% UVA and UVB protection from the suns harmful rays. Also, to keep all kinds of glare down, especially when you’re on the water this summer boating, fishing (for compliments or for real fish), and/or lounging by the pool, try polarized lenses. You will love being able to look right at and through the water with virtually no glare! You can thank me later. For more styles, check out our eyewear gallery.

Tyreke’s brother, Doc Evans, talks about needing glasses for the first time ever
Doc Evans, Tyreke Evans’ brother, just had his annual eye exam by Dr. Ryan Nakamura at Natomas Optometry. Doc is a musician, and good vision is important to him. During his eye exam, he discovered he needed glasses for the first time ever and shared that experience with me after his exam.
Doc Evans ready for his eye exam
Doc, some people aren’t happy when they find out they need glasses for the first time. How did you feel and what advice would you offer someone in this position? I think it’s natural for a person who has always had “perfect vision” to succumb to the fact their vision is getting worse. At least it was for me! Most of the time, as you age, your vision worsens. It’s just part of life. My advice would be to get an eye exam every year to be aware of your vision and eye health. If you do need glasses, you should definitely get them. If you avoid it, you’re limiting what you can see in life. There’s such a great variety of styles available now, that I was actually excited to hear I’d be able to pick out a really cool pair that fits my personality.
How will having glasses impact your work as a musician? As an artist and producer, I need to be able to see the music from a digital standpoint, which includes placing each bar or verse within the song. Clear vision is important for me to be accurate in what I do.
How did the exam itself go? My eye exam was fun! Dr. Nakamura was very knowledgeable and told me he was looking for signs of diabetes and high blood pressure — just by looking in my eye! I think that is amazing. It was fast and painless, and now I know my eyes are healthy. I love my new glasses and see so much better!

Spring is in the California air, my friends! We’ve been experiencing some trends such as, rain showers, peeks of warm sunshine, buds on trees; the start of flower blossoms…a transition is evident. However, that’s not the only transition that should be evident right about now. Your winter eyewear should be transitioning to spring eyewear! I’ve been keeping a close eye out on the eyewear trends that will bring you, what I’m calling the “Spring Fever 2011 – Top 4 Fashion Mave Favs.”
One word: Red. Big or small? No matter. Is it because it’s the month of February and Valentine’s Day just came and went? Who knows and who cares, just dare to wear it!
Cause a Seen. Be seen in aviator sunglasses. They are here to stay. Go all the way incognito and add a mirror coating to the lenses. Beyond cool. Time to call up Poncherello and Baker (CHIPS TV show 80′s television series) and ask for their sunglasses back!
Call of the Wild. Leather accents. Need I say more?
Get Your Geek On. For all you computer users out there (so dear to my heart) PLEASE consider making a bold statement in thick, square, tortoise frames or show off your librarian side with a slender wire rim in soft gold.
Find all these styles and more in our online eyewear gallery. It wouldn’t be right if I didn’t ask you to also consider an annual eye exam this February…eyes need love too.
