This weekend I had the opportunity to observe our mission in action within a community that is close to our organization’s heart. It’s always interesting to see how things come full circle, and how you can never anticipate the ties that bring them together.
We worked closely with NBA star DeMarcus Cousins to give back to his hometown of Mobile, Alabama, by putting on a basketball camp for kids at his alma mater, LeFlore Magnet High School. In addition to drills, skills and pep talks, the kids were also provided access to another critical tool they need to help reach their full potential: eye exams and glasses.
It was a meaningful homecoming for VSP as well. Mobile is one of the areas where we deployed resources to equip local VSP doctors to continue providing care to the community during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina 10 years ago. It was through these relief efforts in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas that the idea for the VSP Mobile Eyes program was born. Since then, the program has continued to respond to disasters as it evolves and expands to provide access to care for communities in need across the U.S.
DeMarcus is passionate about giving back and inspiring the kids in his community to #DoGood. VSP is passionate about increasing access to eye care and eyewear to ensure that everyone has a chance to see what’s possible for themselves and for their community.
Now that’s a great circle.
