My dog was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He's 7 years old and is my best friend. He is also losing his eyesight which combined with the diabetes has all come on so quick it's hard to see him like this, just a week ago he was living a totally different life. I hope we can get through this and I hope he doesn't suffer much. I will cherish every moment we have together as I did before and remember his fun loving ways of before.

Provider fees are miserable. I get paid $31.50 for a full examination and refraction from VSP. That's about 22% of my fee. Let's be honest here, Liz. VSP is trying to bundle more care under the same price tag to benefit their pockets at the expense of all eye care providers. The client pays for extra programs (diabetic, etc) to be included with their vision examination that are already covered by your medical insurance. They are also creating a contact lens formulary with their Contact Lens Program that limits the providers' choices in determining which contact lenses are optimal for each patient on an individual basis. We need insurance reform just as much as health care reform.

While some folk hate the idea of glasses (especially in the middle of a school year!), there is always something a bit magical about being able to see clearly (whether it be for the first time, or after a delay between noticing visual degradation and having it corrected).

Usually the doctor does not get to see this, as the ophthalmologist does not dispense, and the exam and dispensary parts of an optometrist's office are often separate and segregated.

It's always great to (re)discover directly the ways in which your knowledge and skills are able to transform someone's life.

That's more than a little frightening. The glazing material they had then was nowhere near as smooth as the compounds we have today. It's possible that while the test subjects did not have to wear glasses, the contacts scratched their eyes enough to make their long-term vision worse.

Great post, an annual eye exam is always important. Even if your vision still seems to be ok, the exam can also detect number of diseases. Think a free exam would put me on the nice list? lol
