Today’s post is a guest blog by Steve T. Steve works with our eyewear company in New York and knows a ton about sports vision and performance lenses.
I was on the golf course this past autumn with my father who needs glasses. I say “needs” because although he has glasses, he doesn’t always wear them when he should. He is a great golfer and could make the Champions Tour if he had a bit more time. But here he is, trying to sink a putt without his glasses.
Sports Fact: The putting surface is one place you need perfect vision. Golf is one of the most precise visual sports there is. Inconsistencies in your stroke aside, you don’t stand a chance if you are misaligning your putt because of less-than-perfect visual information. After all, misaiming by even a quarter-of-an-inch at the ball could mean a few inches or more off at the cup.
So why is my father not wearing prescription glasses? Because he didn’t think the type of sunglasses he likes to wear were available with a prescription. You may say, “Why not wear your regular glasses, perhaps with a tinted lens?” Well, he likes the performance benefits he gets from his Nike sunglasses: a stable fit so when he swings they don’t move; a ventilated nose piece to prevent fogging; an adjustable fit for comfort and grip and a frame design that helps to prevent sunlight leakage.
Once I told him that those Nike Show X2 sunglasses he so adores are available with his prescription, he almost didn’t believe me. I told him Nike has its own lab that is not only familiar with the Nike styles but does all the R&D to make sure they can offer a certain range of prescriptions for each. Best of all, he has VSP insurance so I told him Nike is the only sport brand that has its prescription sun lenses covered by VSP.* I told him to visit his eye doc and they would get him set up with a new pair.
Fast forward about five months: now all I hear is how great his prescription sunglasses are. He tells everyone, “I don’t know how I was able putt before wearing them.” Yeah, he’s sinking a few more putts, but what’s most important is that by eliminating one variable in his game he is able to train his eyes and body better to really benefit from the drills he does on the green.
