It’s that time of year again…school time! Sporting new clothes, hip haircuts and new school supplies, your kids head off for another year of learning. But what about their vision?
Twenty-five percent of all children have a vision problem significant enough to affect their performance in school, and experts say that vision accounts for as much as 80 percent of the learning process for a child.
Medical apps have become increasingly popular; in fact 44 million were downloaded last year alone. If you want to quickly screen your child’s vision, you can download a popular free smartphone app called EyeXam – currently the #1 downloaded app in eyecare. Developed by an optometrist and technology guru, EyeXam can be easily used to assess visual acuity, astigmatism, and color vision. Reduced visual acuity and astigmatism can result in difficulty with reading and focusing. If a child has to struggle to see, they are going to struggle to learn. Color vision deficiencies can also be problematic for school-related tasks that depend on color recognition.
EyeXam is for information purposes and is not a substitute for a licensed eye doctor, but is a very handy tool to perform a quick screening. Once you’ve completed the screening, hop over to the Doctor Finder feature where you can easily locate and call a VSP provider in your area to schedule an appointment.
Of course, EyeXam is not just for kids. Try it out yourself! In fact, it’s a great app for all ages, even the elderly. The Amsler Grid feature allows users to monitor one of the leading causes of blindness – macular degeneration. If you’re not sure what macular degeneration is, check out the EyeWiki feature – an eye encyclopedia covering the vast spectrum of eye disease, diagnosis and treatment. Remember that annual eye exams are important for early detection of diseases and monitoring of eye health.
As we are becoming increasingly mobile and dependent on our smartphones, EyeXam is a great tool to have at your disposal if you have an eye emergency while you’re traveling for work or on vacation and need to find a local doctor. Just search VSP in the App Store and download the EyeXam app for free. Want to see more? Click here to see a quick video of EyeXam’s features.
