NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins had a busy summer playing basketball against athletes of all levels – from Olympians in Brazil to school-age kids and teens in three states!
This is the second year VSP Global has sponsored the DeMarcus Cousins Elite Skills Basketball Camps, which took place in Sacramento,CA, in June; Lexington, KY, where Cousins went to college, in September; and Mobile, AL, Cousins hometown and origin of VSP’s mobile clinic program.
In Sacramento and Mobile campers received instruction from Division 1 basketball coaches, participated in a Q&A session with Cousins, and heard from Sacramento Kings Coach Dave Joerger on topics like anti-bullying, education and nutrition.
Campers and their families who qualified also received no-cost eye exams and glasses thanks to local VSP optometrists and employees who volunteered their time.
From all three outreach events, 444 people in total received access to eye care on board the clinic or through gift certificates to visit VSP doctors. Nearly 100 people received new glasses on board the clinic. Campers also received Nike sunglasses to help protect their eyes off the court.
“This camp is a tremendous event where it’s free to the kids attending and we provide eye exams and eye glasses to anyone who requires it. At the end of the day it’s all about helping people see,” said Jim McGrann, VSP Global president and CEO.
VSP Global is committed to helping people see what’s possible in their lives and communities, in the U.S. and around the world. We look forward to continuing to provide access to care through events like this. In Mobile, we’re exploring opportunities to develop sustainable access to eyecare through John L. Leflore Magnet Higth School, Cousins’ alma matter.
