Beware of Doe-Eyed Trend

Lady Gaga has become a trend-setter around the world. This time, it’s not about her racey outfits but more for her eyes. In her recent music video for her track “Bad Romance,” her eyes have sparked a new trend here in the U.S. known as the “circle contact lens.”

Originating from South Korea, and illegal in the States, these lenses take a new spin on the traditional colored-contact lens. “The lens extend beyond the iris, the colored part of the eye, making the eye appear larger. It’s purely cosmetic,” said medical correspondent, Dr. Jennifer Ashton with the CBS Early Show. These contacts give a doll or doe-eyed appearance (see Lady Gaga on the right) and have become popular among teens. Dr. Ashton goes on to stay the risks of these cosmetic lenses include infection, corneal ulcer & abrasion, vision impairment and lack of oxygen.

Contact Lenses Could Soon Monitor Glucose Levels

contact-lenses

I was amazed to read that contact lenses may soon be a source for measuring glucose. How incredible would that be?

Professor Jin Zhang at The University of Western Ontario developed a technology that allows particles in contact lenses to change color based on the amount of glucose found in tears. This would give someone with diabetes an alternative to drawing blood when testing their glucose levels. They’d simply have to look in the mirror!

While I can’t quite fathom exactly how the color change would work with a person’s contact lenses, it certainly seems like a huge discovery. I can’t wait to see how this technology ends up developing.

Think Sunlenses, not Sunglasses.

Development is currently underway to bring transition lenses – lenses that darken in response to UV light – to the world of contacts. As an avid contact lens user, I’m eager for this new technology to hit the commercial public.

No more fumbling for my lost sunglasses before my morning jog. Ok – that was a lie. I don’t jog in the mornings, and I don’t have jogging sunglasses. You know why? Because I don’t have contacts that protect my eyes from the blinding morning sunlight, that’s why. But imagine being able to do all of your outdoor activities/sports without the hassle of the sunlight OR the constant readjustment of frames on your face.sunlenses

The Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) in Singapore is currently in the testing phase of this technology, with hopes of hitting the Korea and Japan markets within a year. Check out Technology Review’s article for more information.
