The monocle is back. Really?

Dashing fashion statement? Half a pair of glasses? Or both?

Dashing fashion statement? Half a pair of glasses? Or both?

Needless to say, I didn’t see this trend coming.

According to an article on Telegraph.co.uk, monocles are making a come-back. Our intrepid blogger, Vernon D., documented the birth of the monocle in the 18th century, but I never anticipated that 300 years later this one-lensed eyepiece would be a hit on the high streets of London yet again.

Read the article, and tell me… are you investing in a monocle for 2010?

A Rookie MRT’s Perspective

Will B. works in VSP’s Customer Service department, part of our fabulous team that achieved the prestigious Service Quality Measurement, Inc. (SQM) Award of “World Class Customer Satisfaction” for the seventh year in a row! He shares his experience as a first time Mobile Response Team (MRT) member with the VSP Mobile Eyes® program.WillB

I was fortunate enough to be selected to go on the last Mobile Eyes trip for 2009 and am quickly experiencing first hand, the work is truly some of the most rewarding work I have done with VSP.

We are half way done with our trip to Central California, and so far everything is running smoothly.  Before the trip, I had a general idea of what to expect.  I was impressed that we have most everything onboard that you would find in a VSP doctor’s office.  We can read the prescription off the patient’s current glasses, we can test for Glaucoma and even do an auto-refraction for the doctor.  The VSP doctors who come on board and provide the exams have everything they need to complete a comprehensive exam.  They even dilate patient’s eyes if they need to get a closer look.

Specs for Success at Animo Justice and Animo Ralph Bunche

The clinic outside of the Animo Ralph Bunche and Animo Justice campus.

Wednesday was my first day working as a tech on our mobile clinic, and it put me to the test! On our day of a series of events in partnership with Green Dot Public Schools, we visited Animo Ralph Bunche and Animo Justice. These schools share the same campus, so we were able to help students from both schools from one location.

These students were amazing! The results of the Green Dot program are apparent after talking to the kids that we saw. They’d just finished taking their PSAT test, and were articulate, polite, and eager to get their eyes examined. Looking back on myself at that age, I could have taken a cue or two from their manners and poise.

All of the students loved the selection of eyewear on the clinic, and were totally excited about the great brands available to them. Who wouldn’t be glad to wear glasses from Fendi, Coach, or Sean John?

Do you have problems applying eye drops? Do you tend to miss your eye and waste several drops down your cheek?
Then, you need the funnel vision frames.

OK, these frames aren’t really available under your VSP vision care benefits. They are just one of many Chindogu creations by Japanese inventor Kenji Kawakami.

The Japanese literal translation of Chindogu is “unusual tools.” Read more »

Today we have a guest blog from Tresa Dupray, a VSP Mobile Response Team member.

I’ve worked for VSP for many years and have been proud of the efforts we have made to give back to our community.  I joined the Mobile Eyes program as a Mobile Response Team member so that I could become a part of VSP’s gift of giving.  I spent the past two weeks traveling with the Mobile Clinic providing free exams and glasses to children in Tampa, FL and to the homeless in Charleston, SC.   My experience with the program has far exceeded my expectation. Giving kids the gift of sight…and then some

Yesterday VSP participated in an event that not only gave kids an opportunity to be successful in school by providing them with comprehensive eye exams, eyewear and school supplies, but also gave them another reason to smile – a chance to meet and play basketball with Bobby Jackson from the Sacramento Kings!

We spent the day with 40 Herman Leimbach elementary students, their families and school staff along with parents and students from two other elementary schools who conducted their own school supply fund raising effort for these students through a program called “Kids Helping Kids.”

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Bobby Jackson arrived to the absolute delight of the kids (and the parents!). They toured SeeLia, our mobile clinic, and helped a few of the students pick out their new frames from the dispensary located on the clinic.

EyeWriter helps the disabled by enabling them to draw/write with eye movement only.

Hot on the heels of some weird guy’s post, EyeWriter allows users to manipulate computer drawing programs with only their eye movements.

The EyeWriter project is on ongoing collaborative research effort to empower people, who are suffering from ALS, with creative technologies. The project began in Los Angeles, Caifornia in 2009, when members of the GRL, FAT, OF and TEG communities teamed-up with a legendary LA graffiti writer, publisher and activist, named Tony EyeWriter 2Quan, aka TEMPTONE. Tony was diagnosed with ALS in 2003. The disease has left him almost completely physically paralyzed… except for his eyes. But, the ALS hasn’t touched Tony’s sharp mind, creative energy or his desire to write graffiti. In August of 2009, artist from around the world: London, Hong Kong, Madrid, Amsterdam and New York City, converged for 10 days in southern California, converted Mick and Caskey Ebeling’s Venice Beach house into a laboratory and began to work with Tony on a low-cost, open source eye-tracking system that would allow ALS patients to draw using just their eyes. Though still in the early developing stages, this looks great!

Does The Frame Make The Man Or Woman?

Brian B. is a member of VSP's Customer Care team.

Brian B. is a member of VSP's Customer Care team.

Well folks it’s that time of year… time for new glasses. If you are anything like me, picking the right pair of frames is crucial. I have to find the right balance between stylish and professional and something that I can afford. Every year I feel this pressure to pick my frames and place my order right away. I decided that this year it was going to be fun. I called a couple of friends and formulated a plan. We would go look at frames together and then go to lunch. No pressure just good times with good friends.

A couple of weekends ago we put our plan to the test. We went to five offices, wrote down some styles, took a couple of pictures and laughed. Over our lunch, the conversation changed from what we had seen to how the frame that you choose is a reflection of you and or your status.

I look for style and not brands, however in contrasKarlt one of my friends will only wear a name-brand frame, this year he was predetermined to buy Karl Lagerfeld frames. When I inquired why, he explained that as an artist they project to the world that he is successful.

I am not sure how much growing up in a small Oregon town, where name brands weren’t an option has helped sculpt my personal style, however when I shop it’s more important that I like the product than who makes the product.

What do you think? Does the name on the frame make the man or woman?

I did pick out new frames… want to see? Well you will have to wait just a little while more. ;-)

Introducing Wink Glasses, appropriate name council approved.

Vernon

Vernon D. is a member of VSP's Provider Services team.

Will this product reduce eyestrain – yes. Will it also make you look silly while using it – yes. Can you even understand the product page - maybe.

Aimed at reducing stress upon the eye while staring at bright lit, boxy objects that change shapes and colors (some might call these computers, or TV screens), the Wink Glasses will dectect how long you’ve gone without blinking. In order punish these non-blinkers, the device will automatically fog up, forcing the user to blink to clear up the device.

Initially targeting the gaming and computer audience, I’m finding other uses for this product. Imagine these being thrown into the national Wink Glassesstaring contest semi-final rounds, or maybe tossing them on before your 2 hour long lecture on soil & minerals – forcing you to at least seem interested by blinking every once in a while.

Projected to hold up to an 8-hour charge, Wink Glasses can be connected via USB. Product will be released on the Japanese market this month for 15,750 Yen, translating to 7,895 Rupees, or 99.45 Pounds, depending on where you live.
