Green Dot New York students, Lori, and Liz.
Liz C. is a mobile response team member and is an Account Manger working within the VSP Field Sales department in our New Jersey regional office. She shares her recent first experience working on board SeeZar at the Green Dot Bronx event in New York.
While I’ve been a part of the Mobile Response Team since it first started about two years ago, I just recently had the opportunity to attend my first event at the Green Dot Public School in NY this week. Having recently moved to the east coast about 8 months ago it was nice to participate in a local event! I was so excited that I couldn’t fall sleep until midnight the night before even though I had to wake up at 5am. I felt a kid waiting to go to Disneyland. After almost a year since I saw SeeZar last, I smiled big as I saw him drive up and we headed off to the GreenDot school located in the Bronx area.

Lorie U. (right) poses with a patient after helping her select glasses.
Lorie U. is a mobile response team member and works in VSP’s Provider Services department. This is her second trip with the mobile clinic and she recounts her experience during the recent York, PA event.
Saturday, we broke a record by seeing 91 patients. We saw mothers, fathers, kids, grandparents…a wide array of people all with their own story.
At one point during the day, four sisters came in, little girls ages 3-8. They were not so sure about the idea of having glasses, none had them previously. One of the sisters tried on the Disney “Snow White” frames . When I asked her if she felt like a princess in the glasses, her face lit up, she giggled & nodded. I hope she feels like that every time she wears them. Read more »

David Wakefield is a VSP Friends and Family driver and husband of VSP employee, Shelly Wakefield. He shares his experience during his first event with the Mobile Eyes team in York, PA.
I came into this event with a blend of curiosity and apprehension, not really sure what to expect. The team was fired up and putting together their game plan and I followed along hoping to be useful and not in the way. We were scheduled to see 102 people today which would be a new record for a one day event. I found that everyone, from the VSP team to the doctors and rotary volunteers, were all motivated to work together to overcome the unknowns to make this event a success.
We set up and were ready to begin right on schedule. The patients began to trickle in and we were blessed with a slow but steady warm up. We were wondering if the bad weather would be keeping the people away, but we soon found that the need to see outweighed the desire to stay dry and the long lines began to form. I was tasked with operating the auto-refractor and had the opportunity to experience the personalities of every patient who came in. The mix of emotions was astounding but everyone had one thing in common, they wanted to be able to see. Read more »

I was an optician for 12 years before joining VSP and I’ve heard many reasons for broken frames and lenses. Here are a few of my favorites.
1. I think there’s something wrong with my glasses.
My patient stands before me, squinting through glasses that are clearly askew. I can tell right off that his glasses are missing a nose pad—no wait, make that both nose pads—and the arm that holds the nose pad, and I wonder how he was able to drive to the office.
Did you know that you can visit your VSP eye doctor to change out old nose pads for shiny new ones? Over time the natural oils in your skin can turn nose pads green. Pop in and give your frames a quick, much-needed refresh just by changing the nose pads.

Although I don’t have children, I am reminded in my job how incredible kids can be. Take for example, Travis, a sweet young man I met in Tampa, FL last week while I was working on the mobile clinic at an elementary school.
Travis came on board for his eye exam and learned that he needed glasses. While he was selecting his frames with one of his friends (who happened to be a little girl), I asked them “are you girls having fun selecting your frames?”
“I am a boy,” Travis said. I apologized to him and he replied “That’s OK, I get it all the time.”

Jill N. is a member of VSP's Corporate Public Relations team - and a huge fan of NBA star Bobby Jackson.
Yesterday VSP participated in an event that not only gave kids an opportunity to be successful in school by providing them with comprehensive eye exams, eyewear and school supplies, but also gave them another reason to smile – a chance to meet and play basketball with Bobby Jackson from the Sacramento Kings!
We spent the day with 40 Herman Leimbach elementary students, their families and school staff along with parents and students from two other elementary schools who conducted their own school supply fund raising effort for these students through a program called “Kids Helping Kids.”
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Bobby Jackson arrived to the absolute delight of the kids (and the parents!). They toured SeeLia, our mobile clinic, and helped a few of the students pick out their new frames from the dispensary located on the clinic.

Bobby Jackson and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson pose with VSP Drs. April Omoto and Stephanie Kirschbaum.

We welcome Dr. David Kisling back to the VSP Blog. Dr. Kisling is a VSP network doctor and guest blogger. Today’s post helps parents take the anxiety out of a child’s pre-school eye examination.

Dr. Kisling is a VSP network optometrist practicing in Ft. Collins, CO.
Is your preschooler or kindergartner ready for their first eye exam? There are critical times to have eye check ups, and this is when you as a parent typically start to have concerns that your child can see his or her best. The onset of the school year brings in many young children to the eye doctor’s office for the first time. Some of them are very anxious because their experience with doctors has normally been associated with sickness and pain.
You can help alleviate your child’s anxiety about going to see the optometrist with six easy steps:
- Explain this is a fun type of doctor’s office without shots. Advise them they will need to answer a few questions as best as they can and there are no right or wrong answers. Assure them if they do need glasses they will get to help pick out colors and shapes they like. If they need vision correction, give them some ownership of the process. If it is determined they need glasses, make positive statements of how much they will enjoy seeing the leaves on the trees and their favorite movies.
- Prepare them for eye drops. You can refer to them as tickle drops that make their eyes tickle for a few seconds. Yes, they do sting briefly, but when I tell children they will probably tickle a few seconds that is what usually happens. Right after drops are put in the eye I start asking children questions to distract them for the first minute or so. If they are thinking about something and answering questions they don’t feel the drops. You can do the same thing by barraging them with questions that have happy answers. Read more »

I believe you should really consider the addition of an anti-reflective [AR] coating when filling your child’s lens prescription. A lot of people may cringe at this suggestion because we all know the little buggers can be hard on their lenses. Anyone who’s purchased a pair of glasses with an AR coating knows that they usually come with a special little cloth and cleaning instructions designed to encourage proper care and the preservation of your investment. The instructions should apply to any lens, regardless of material, and the little microfiber cloth, or similarly soft material, should be used to clean any lens—coated or not. Lenses are expensive and require appropriate care. If your kid wears spectacles, he or she needs to be taught what that care is, because if coated lenses can’t be treated with respect, then uncoated ones will suffer at least as badly. I say “at least” because the world of anti-reflective coatings has evolved. Read more »

Kids are always inspired to look and act like their heroes. I remember growing up, my hero was She-Ra (she was the twin sister of He-Man, Master of the Universe, for those of you not in the know). I had all the action figures, and I would put my hair in a high ponytail like She-Ra and reenact my favorite scenes from the show. Her clothing choices were a little questionable, so Mom didn’t allow me to actually dress like her, but my point in bringing this
up is that kids are always looking for heroes to emulate. Even if I couldn’t wear She-Ra’s weird clothing, I could wear her crazy ponytail and imitate her sword-wielding ways.
Nowadays, kids have different choices for heroes but they’re still looking for someone to look up to. Harry Potter is an international phenomenon-the bestselling book series spurred blockbuster movies. Everyone, whether they like him or not, knows who Harry Potter is and what his trademarks are-his scar and his round glasses. He’s “The Boy Who Lived” and he fights for good, although with a wand instead of a sword. At Halloween, the streets get taken over by swarms of kids wearing fake scars, waving their wands, and of course, the most key piece of the costume, the round glasses!
Now, call me a conspiracy theorist, but I do not
find it a random coincidence that the latest Harry Potter movie, “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” was released on July 15th, 2009, and shortly thereafter, Harry Potter-style glasses starting flying off the shelves. And, coincidentally, short on the heels of the movie’s release, August is also Children’s Eye Health & Safety Month. It’s a perfect time to get kids educated and excited about their eye health and wearing their glasses…thank you, Harry, for making wearing glasses so cool!
