Watch season two of VSP EyeFiles with NBA star Tyreke Evans!

Success in sports doesn’t rely solely on your athletic ability. NBA Star and Sacramento Kings player Tyreke Evans knows that in order to play your best, you have to see your best, and that means getting an annual eye exam. Evans stars in the second season of VSP EyeFiles video series, which you can watch on the on VSP’s Facebook page. The series offers parents fun and entertaining reminders to keep their children’s vision healthy and top of mind, while providing answers to a variety of eye health questions.

Tyreke Evans, 2010 Rookie of the Year, still going strong

MaryBeth R. is a member of VSP's Marketing Team and is an avid sports fan.

In this, my first blog post as VSP’s new sports blogger, I’d like to congratulate professional basketball player Tyreke Evans on an outstanding game last night in a nationally-televised game against the Denver Nuggets. Tyreke led the Sacramento Kings to a 122-102 victory and recorded a season-high 12 assists, one short of his career high.

So far, Tyreke is avoiding that so-called “sophomore slump.” He is second among all sophomores when totaling points (533), rebounds (145), and assists (168). Not bad, especially when you consider how high Tyreke set the bar last year averaging 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists a game and taking Rookie of the Year honors.

All of this makes me proud that VSP is Tyreke’s exclusive eyecare and eyewear provider. Watching Tyreke dish passes left and right with his teammates catching the ball in stride illustrates just how important vision is in sports.

Are you an athlete? Have your eyes checked once a year to make sure you’re getting the most out of your performance. Learn what you can expect in an eye exam here.

Tyreke’s New Year’s Resolutions

Tyreke Evans, 2010 Rookie of the Year

2010 has been a big year for me. As I think about the start of the new year, I’m reminded about the importance of setting goals and following dreams. Here are some of my resolutions for the upcoming year:

Appreciate the little things - I’m very blessed that I get to focus on playing basketball every day. It’s something I love to do. Sometimes we get going so fast, we don’t stop to appreciate the life we’ve been blessed with.

Good health - We all have health issues we deal with occasionally. My goal is to stay as healthy as possible in 2011.

Play hard - It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to play sports at this level. I’ve made a commitment to this game and will continue to give my best every single day.

Spend time with family - Family is important, and I plan to spend as much time with mine as I can in 2011.

And, of course, I will also be getting my annual eye exam to start the year off right. Vision is a very important part of my life, and I plan to take care of my eyes by visiting my VSP doctor. Make sure that’s something you include on your list of things to do in the new year.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Giving kids the gift of sight…and then some

Yesterday VSP participated in an event that not only gave kids an opportunity to be successful in school by providing them with comprehensive eye exams, eyewear and school supplies, but also gave them another reason to smile – a chance to meet and play basketball with Bobby Jackson from the Sacramento Kings!

We spent the day with 40 Herman Leimbach elementary students, their families and school staff along with parents and students from two other elementary schools who conducted their own school supply fund raising effort for these students through a program called “Kids Helping Kids.”

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Bobby Jackson arrived to the absolute delight of the kids (and the parents!). They toured SeeLia, our mobile clinic, and helped a few of the students pick out their new frames from the dispensary located on the clinic.
