Team Tyreke Scores with Great Vision (part 4 of 4)

Tyreke’s brother, Doc Evans, talks about needing glasses for the first time ever

Doc Evans, Tyreke Evans’ brother, just had his annual eye exam by Dr. Ryan Nakamura at Natomas Optometry. Doc is a musician, and good vision is important to him. During his eye exam, he discovered he needed glasses for the first time ever and shared that experience with me after his exam.

Doc Evans ready for his eye exam

Doc, some people aren’t happy when they find out they need glasses for the first time. How did you feel and what advice would you offer someone in this position?
I think it’s natural for a person who has always had “perfect vision” to succumb to the fact their vision is getting worse. At least it was for me! Most of the time, as you age, your vision worsens. It’s just part of life. My advice would be to get an eye exam every year to be aware of your vision and eye health. If you do need glasses, you should definitely get them. If you avoid it, you’re limiting what you can see in life. There’s such a great variety of styles available now, that I was actually excited to hear I’d be able to pick out a really cool pair that fits my personality.

How will having glasses impact your work as a musician?
As an artist and producer, I need to be able to see the music from a digital standpoint, which includes placing each bar or verse within the song. Clear vision is important for me to be accurate in what I do.

How did the exam itself go?
My eye exam was fun! Dr. Nakamura was very knowledgeable and told me he was looking for signs of diabetes and high blood pressure — just by looking in my eye! I think that is amazing. It was fast and painless, and now I know my eyes are healthy. I love my new glasses and see so much better!

Tyreke’s Trainer, LaMont Peterson, Talks about His Eye Exam and Transitions Lenses

LaMont Peterson has been professional basketball player Tyreke Evans’ trainer since Tyreke was 13 years old. These guys spend a lot of time together training for games—indoors and out—and they both know that healthy eye sight is key to staying on the ball. They even go to the same VSP practice, Natomas Optometry. LaMont recently had his annual eye exam with Dr. Myra Lew and got a new pair of glasses with Transitions lenses. Transitions lenses darken and lighten automatically according to the surrounding light conditions. I chatted with LaMont afterward to see how his exam went and how he likes his new glasses.

LaMont, I see you went with Transitions lenses. What made you choose Transitions over prescription sunglasses?
I like the convenience of not having to switch from glasses to sunglasses every time I go inside or outside. I guess prescription sunglasses would be nice too, but I really don’t want to have to carry two pairs of glasses around.

Did you learn anything new about your eye health during your eye exam with Dr. Lew?
My eyes are healthy, but Dr. Lew did tell me it’s important to protect your eyes from UV rays when you’re outside. I knew dark lenses made me more comfortable outdoors, but I didn’t realize there were also health benefits. Too much sun exposure is bad for your eyes. Wearing lenses that block the UV rays can help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration. Transitions lenses take care of all this for me.

You and Tyreke have both had your annual eye exams now. Are you glad you had it?
I am. You know, it really doesn’t take that long, and then you know that your eyes are healthy. In this business, you can’t take chances like that.

Tyreke Evans Gets His Annual Eye Exam

Professional basketball player Tyreke Evans recently went in to see VSP provider Ryan Nakamura, O.D., at Natomas Optometry for his annual eye exam. I sat down with him afterwards to hear how it went.

So, Tyreke, how did your eye exam go?
It went great. It was easy and painless, and I walked away knowing my eyes are healthy.

Did you learn anything new during your eye exam?
I didn’t realize how many different kinds of tests were involved in an eye exam. Dr. Nakamura tested my peripheral vision and depth perception, which are both important for my game. He tested my vision, and it was perfect. He also looked for problems that can lead to losing your vision.

Did anything surprise you about your eye exam?
I knew eye exams were important, but I didn’t realize how technical they were. Dr. Nakamura looked inside my eyes to make sure they were healthy, and he explained to me what he was looking for. An eye doctor can see signs of diabetes and high blood pressure just by looking at the blood vessels in your eyes.

Why are eye exams important to you?
Eye exams are very important. You never know what’s going on inside your eyes, and you need to make sure a doctor is checking them out every year. Something could be going wrong, without you knowing it. Some people only go to the eye doctor when they can’t see well, and those people are missing out on something that could save their sight. My vision is critical for my sport, and I get my eyes checked every year.

Great On-The-Court Vision Has Tyreke Evans At #1

MaryBeth R. is a member of VSP's Marketing Team and is an avid sports fan

Hey, NBA fans—it’s All-Star Weekend and that means basketball’s best are converging in L.A. to put on an endless display of high-flying dunks and did-you-see-that moves. It also means we’re going to be bombarded with mid-season report cards on every sports show and Web site out there. So, that got me thinking: how’s Tyreke Evans stacking up?

A look at the numbers shows that Tyreke’s sophomore outing has so far been a repeat of his phenomenal rookie season. His combined average of points, rebounds and assists places him 1st among all sophomores and 31st overall. His per game stats look like this: 18.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. Last season, when he earned Rookie of the Year honors, Tyreke averaged 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists a game. Can you say “consistency”?

None of this would be possible, of course, without great vision. Tyreke takes care of his eyes by making sure he gets an annual eye exam. You should, too. When planning your visit, keep these tips in mind.

Tyreke Evans, 2010 Rookie of the Year, still going strong

In this, my first blog post as VSP’s new sports blogger, I’d like to congratulate professional basketball player Tyreke Evans on an outstanding game last night in a nationally-televised game against the Denver Nuggets. Tyreke led the Sacramento Kings to a 122-102 victory and recorded a season-high 12 assists, one short of his career high.

So far, Tyreke is avoiding that so-called “sophomore slump.” He is second among all sophomores when totaling points (533), rebounds (145), and assists (168). Not bad, especially when you consider how high Tyreke set the bar last year averaging 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists a game and taking Rookie of the Year honors.

All of this makes me proud that VSP is Tyreke’s exclusive eyecare and eyewear provider. Watching Tyreke dish passes left and right with his teammates catching the ball in stride illustrates just how important vision is in sports.

Tyreke’s New Year’s Resolutions

Tyreke Evans, 2010 Rookie of the Year

2010 has been a big year for me. As I think about the start of the new year, I’m reminded about the importance of setting goals and following dreams. Here are some of my resolutions for the upcoming year:

Appreciate the little things - I’m very blessed that I get to focus on playing basketball every day. It’s something I love to do. Sometimes we get going so fast, we don’t stop to appreciate the life we’ve been blessed with.

Good health - We all have health issues we deal with occasionally. My goal is to stay as healthy as possible in 2011.

Play hard - It takes a lot of dedication and hard work to play sports at this level. I’ve made a commitment to this game and will continue to give my best every single day.

Spend time with family - Family is important, and I plan to spend as much time with mine as I can in 2011.

And, of course, I will also be getting my annual eye exam to start the year off right. Vision is a very important part of my life, and I plan to take care of my eyes by visiting my VSP doctor. Make sure that’s something you include on your list of things to do in the new year.

Happy New Year to everyone.

Seeing China through Tyreke’s eyes

Tyreke Evans

Tyreke Evans, 2010 Rookie of the Year

Hey everyone, I recently went to China to promote Nike’s All-Asia Basketball Camp. The top 80 high school players from Asian countries get together for a week of skill training, conditioning and playing games. Andre Iguodala and I were the camp hosts.

Over 5 days, I saw the talent from the best countries in Asia, went to the Forbidden City, and climbed the Great Wall. My mom said most people live their whole life and never get to see what I saw at 20-years-old. I guess she’s right. Here are some pictures from my trip.
I conquered the Great Wall of China!
