Costume contacts can transform your Halloween look, but there are several things to consider before you take your costume to the next level.
Can costume contacts affect my vision?
According to Meghan Riegel, OD, costume contacts can affect your vision because they change the shape of your pupil.
“Let’s say you have cat eye contacts for Halloween, the contacts are going to allow less light into your eyes. That might make it harder to see for the few hours you’re wearing them,” said Dr. Riegel.
Where should I buy costume contacts?
Contact lenses, cosmetic or corrective, are considered medical devices, so it’s important to treat them as such. It’s not just about the lens prescription, but a matter of how the contacts affect your eyes and vision.
“If you’re going to choose to wear costume contact lenses this Halloween, make sure they’re prescribed by your eye doctor and FDA approved,” explained Dr. Riegel.
What are the risks of costume contacts?
Dr. Riegel noted there are serious conditions that could occur when wearing Halloween Costumes, such as:
- Scratches on the cornea
- Corneal infection (an ulcer or sore on the cornea)
- Pink eye
- Decreased vision
