Introducing “Odyssee” – Our New Mobile Eye Care Clinic

By on

Where do you go when you’ve been affected by a disaster and you no longer have your glasses or contacts? What if your eye doctor’s office has also been affected?

Following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the first Eyes of Hope mobile clinic, an eye doctor’s office on wheels, launched to help doctors of optometry quickly return to providing eye care and replacement eyewear following a disaster.

Today, three Eyes of Hope mobile eye care clinics—SeeZar, SeeLia, and Eyenstein—partner with VSP network eye doctors to transform sight wherever it’s needed most. When not responding to communities impacted by disaster, the mobile eye care clinics travel to community and eye doctor-led outreach events across the U.S.

The program continues to grow and evolve! In July, we announced that we’re doubling our commitment to help a #MillionMore people by 2020.

To help us achieve our goal, we are excited to unveil the fourth member of our mobile fleet. The name: Odyssee (pronounced like Odyssey).

The name is, of course, a play on “Odyssey,” an epic journey. Although we altered the spelling a bit to make it clear our mission is to help people SEE, what more perfect of a name for a mobile clinic that will make a difference in the lives of patients across the U.S.

Today, nearly two years ahead of schedule, we’ve already doubled the number of people in need who have gained access to eye care and eyewear! And, through Eyes of Hope, and with the help of Odyssee, we’re committing to another #MillionMore—3 million in total—by 2020.

Such eye care could be crucial to aid disaster survivors from Butte CA Camp Fire. About 50,000 displaced; about 14,000 homes leveled. Predictions for further wildfires, etc. suggest need for mobile health care units.
