Level smart glasses have arrived from VSP Global, and we’ve got the scoop!
Let’s break it down, shall we?
Level began in 2015 as the Project Genesis prototype within our innovation lab, The Shop. A partnership and academic study with the renowned USC Center for Body Computing soon followed in 2016. And results of that groundbreaking work were published last September in the NEJM Catalyst.
Fast forward to today and we are excited to now bring Level smart glasses to market for VSP members just like you!
Check out this quick video and our FAQs below on what you need to know.
What do Level smart glasses do?
Level is activity-tracking technology seamlessly embedded inside the temple of an optical frame. The technology tracks activity via an accompanying smartphone app. As users reach daily step goals, they earn points redeemable for a donation of vision care services to individuals in need.
What types of activity do they track?
Level tracks steps, calories burned, distance, and total activity time. Users can also connect with friends and even locate a misplaced frame through the app’s “Find My Glasses” feature. You can also help others, just by meeting your daily step goals. As you reach your goal each day, you earn points. Once you get a total of 50 points, VSP will donate a comprehensive eye exam and pair of glasses to someone in need through our Eyes of Hope initiatives.

The Level app tracks activity and your donation progress.
Can you tell that there is technology inside just by looking at the frames?
No—and that’s by design! Leslie Muller, co-director of our innovation lab, puts it perfectly: “As proud as we are of the technology and the platform, we also knew that to be considered truly ‘smart,’ these frames had to be beautiful and well designed—period. Eyewear is a medical device, a fashion accessory, and the world’s oldest form of wearable tech. To honor that legacy, we combined industrial design, engineering, and traditional eyewear craftsmanship to create something seamless and fashionable, too.”
Where can I buy them?
Level smart glasses are currently available in Sacramento, CA, Los Angeles, CA, Denver, CO, Washington, D.C., Minneapolis, MN, Portland, OR, and Seattle WA. We’re excited to sell Level through select VSP network doctors participating in the Premier Program in these locations. Level smart glasses are also available nationwide on Eyeconic.com.
How much do they cost?
The MSRP is $270, which excludes lenses. Final pricing will vary based on lens enhancements, the application of vision benefits, and provider location.
What kind of styles and colors do the frames come in?
Three beautiful, unisex frame styles and four color options, including black, classic tortoise, slate, and grey tortoise. You can get a closer look at the frames here.
Can I apply my VSP benefits to purchase Level smart glasses?
Yes! Most people with vision coverage—including VSP members—can apply their benefits to purchase Level. Even with all that technology inside, Level is treated like a standard optical frame under most vision insurance plans. Have questions? Give our customer care team a call and they can walk you through your coverage (800-877-7195).

Level smart glasses come in three frame styles and four colors, all Made in Italy and designed to seamlessly integrate the technology into the left temple. Pictured above is the Hedy frame in classic tortoise (with charging cable).

I love this! I have smart watch but the battery dies and doesn’t keep accurate track. Glasses do not leave my face until I am down for the night.

I need glasses
I wear byfocals so what would that run me on the price
The frames are about $270; lenses sold separately. My lenses (Varilux) cost me about $650 after insurance. With frames, in about the $250 range with insurance, the entire cost is about $810.
Do all optical companies supply these yet! Pritz and Gray in South Jersey?
No, they aren’t available everywhere. They are still being rolled out. To find out when Level smart glasses become available in your area, you can sign up for an Email notification here: http://www.leveltechnology.com/find-level.html

Our office would be interested in carrying these glasses exclusive in our area.
You definitely have a customer from phoenix
I am super interested in these.
I hope they will market it in Australia, I would like to try them myself and recommend it to my patient if I’d proven its effectiveness…
How much
per article, “The MSRP is $270, which excludes lenses.”
The demand for these glasses is high but VSP will only provide them to some providers. I am dying o get a pair but there are no providers around me. I found a provider far away and called them asking if they can send me a pair and they said they only offer glasses to the patients of their office who have already associated themselves with the actually store/optometrist. Then i called VSp back and asked if there was any way i could get the glasses, ANY other way and they said just wait. The support line was sorry and helpful, but im frustrated i cant purchase the glasses any other way.
Will these fit my seeing eye dog?
I’d much rather have glasses with a location device…
$270 for a crappy step counter? What a terrible thing!
amen
I agree!! Do we really need this in our glasses. They are expensive enough!
Of all the technology that could be developed… And this is what they come out with? Oh brother.
Not interested in something else to plug in and charge…
Hi Michael,
While the battery life depends on use, a full charge should last about 5 days. You can learn more about the battery and charging here: http://www.leveltechnology.com/support.html

Haha no. Prescription lenses need changing and that means a new pair. Also, the minute size of the battery means I’ll now have to have a place for my glasses next to my other charging devices. I’ll keep my Fitbit and keep an eye out for gen 2devices.

Should I have any concerns about electronics so close to my brain, for long periods of time?
The device lies dormant while not in use. According to FDA research, there exists no evidence that links health problems to prolonged exposure to radio frequency fields, such as those produced by cell phones. For comparison’s sake, Level transmits 160 microwatts of output power via wireless connectivity. A cell phone transmits roughly 251 milliwatts (or, about 1,600 times as much). However, if you have a pacemaker or other internal electronic device, consult your physician before using any activity tracking device that monitors motion, such as Level.

How about smart glasses that adjust your lenses, now that smart! I would like to be able to go from reading to distance to sunglasses to vision strength.
You got that right!
Now you’re talking!
HMM I wonder about a chip next to your brain all day. Remember the stories about possible links between brain cancer/ tumors and cell phones or ear receivers?

Even though they are available only on selected cities in April, are we able to contact them and have them ship the glasses based on a local eye glass prescription?
Hi Raul,
Level smart glasses won’t be shipped from practices as training and adjustments would be done in person. If you are interested in Level smart glasses you can enter your email and zip code on http://www.leveltechnology.com/find-level.html and we’ll let you know when they are available in your area.

Do these glasses just track steps? I’d like a frame that embedded the Tile technology since I’m always trying to find my glasses after I put them down.
Hi Patricia,
Level smart glasses have a feature to help you find your glasses if they are misplaced. You can learn more about the technology here: http://www.leveltechnology.com/technology.html

i would love to have one of these.
I don’t see the point of these at all. I know where I’m going and where I’ve been, and don’t need to pay $270 to tell the whole world my every step.
Yet another big brother attempt to know who, what, when and where, and it’s none of their business. Is choose to pay for a needy persons exam and glasses. You can keep your infantile, meant to make weak people feel good about themselves 50 points. Wake up people!
No thanks. Wanna impress me? Show me glasses with a built-in heads up display with smart auto focus..
This seems to be a newer way to implement a FitBit type device, the implication in the video shows that the steps are ‘projected’ on the lenses as a Heads Up Display – the actual company site for Level http://www.leveltechnology.com/technology.html – shows a smartphone app with the numbers. I don’t see any differential between a smartwatch, fitness device or this device.
The activity tracking is displayed within a phone app. For those who wear glasses every day, Level smart glasses offer a way to seamlessly integrate activity tracking into their lives and helps give back at the same time.

This product sounds like a waste of money. Anyone spending $270 on this is crazy. You might as well get a smart watch that doesn’t require you to look at your phone. The glasses track your steps? SO DOES THE PHONE THAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT!!! Makes no sense. This must be for people who just like to throw money out the window. I think VSP has just found a way to take away money from hard working consumers. This is a terrible product to promote.
No, but that does sound useful. Level smart glasses can be used to track step count, distance traveled, overall active minutes, and calories burned.
-Angelina F., VSP
Thanx for the response. Maybe I gave you an idea for another project. Useful might be an understatement for a certain population. haha Thx again.
can i purchase these online?
Level smart glasses will be available for purchase through VSP Network providers so that frame adjustments and training can be done in person. To see when they arrive at practices near you, you can sign up for an email notification here: http://www.leveltechnology.com/find-level.html

Great, another way for Big Brother to track our every movement. No thanks.
How many unrelated areas of the smartphone does *this* app track? Contacts? GPS? Recent Calls? etc?
