Dr. Frank Fontana—better known as Uncle Frank to colleagues and friends—is 95. He has worked as an optometrist for 66 years, with no plans to retire. Why? In his words, “Because I love my work. Anything else bores me to death.”
Dr. Fontana graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry in 1949. He was educated through the G.I. bill after serving in the U.S. Army for three years. He started his own practice in 1950 in St. Louis, Missouri, and is a pioneer in fitting contact lenses.
We sat down with Dr. Fontana to talk about his life’s work and why he never wants to retire. Here is his story.
