6 Tips to Get the Most from Your Vision Benefits

By on

Follow these 6 tips to get the most out of your vision plan. That means low out-of-pocket costs while getting access to great eye doctors and high-quality eyewear.

How to make your vision benefits work hard for you:

1. Know what your plan covers
To find out what your vision plan covers, simply create an account at vsp.com and log in for your detailed benefit information. Easily find details like co-pays, frame allowance and lens enhancement coverage. You can also print a membership card if you like, but you don’t technically need one.

Insider tip: Use this savings calculator to estimate your total out-of-pocket costs.

2. Find a conveniently located VSP network eye doctor
As a VSP member, you’ll get the most out of your benefits when you visit a Premier Program location. If you don’t have an eye doctor, visit vsp.com to find a Premier Program location near you. When you show up for your appointment, just let them know you have VSP. We’ll take care of the rest.

Insider tip: If you schedule an appointment at a location you didn’t find on vsp.com, make sure to verify they are actually in-network with VSP. Some out-of-network retail locations or websites may say they “accept” VSP, only to offer a limited discount that’s sub par to your in-network benefits.

3. Get a comprehensive eye exam
A comprehensive eye exam is your yearly check-up of your vision as well as the health of your eyes. The entire family can benefit from an eye exam, including babies, young children and teens. Start the year off with the clearest vision possible.

Surprising fact: According to a recent study, most people rate vision as their most important sense while only half got an eye exam in the past year.

4. Choose from a wide selection of stylish frames and lenses
Finding the right eyewear for you and your family is easy when you see a VSP network eye doctor. You’ll get an extra $20 to spend when you choose a featured frame brand. Plus, you can save up to 40% on popular lens enhancements like anti-reflective coatings, progressives, and light-reactive (photochromic) lenses.

Insider tip: If you’re looking for a little style inspiration, check out the virtual try-on tool from Eyeconic.

5. Take advantage of your second-pair eyewear benefit
Many people don’t realize that you can save up to 20% on a second pair of glasses, including any lens enhancements, when you purchase from your VSP network eye doctor within 12 months of your last eye exam.

6. Shopping online? Get in-network savings with Eyeconic
Most VSP members can use their vision benefits to buy eyewear online at Eyeconic—including stylish frames, lens enhancements, and contacts. Visit eyeconic.com to see how seamlessly you can connect your eyewear insurance coverage with your eye doctor’s expertise—all while enjoying in-network savings.

Insider tip: Eyeconic is the ONLY online store to partner with the VSP network of eye doctors to offer in-network benefits.

I would like to know why VSP does not send any kind of statement of visits to dr. How do we know that other items are not being charged to VSP? How do we know that if we are not going yearly, that the drs office is not claiming yearly visits? BCBS, dentists, hospitals all send statements. Why don’t you? I think its irresponsible on your part

    • Angelina F. says:

      Hi Peggy,
While VSP doesn’t automatically send an Explanation of Benefits for each claim, we are happy to provide one by mail or email upon member request. Member Services will be reaching out to you via email to assist further.

  • Brenda says:

Do NOT buy Flexon. VSP-connected optometrists are really pushing this brand. They cost more than many other brands, but VSP is advertising them as if they were virtually indestructible. This is how they present them:

My frames snapped at the bridge less than two years (out of warranty, of course). Unlike in the video, nobody stepped on them; they weren’t put in a dryer or a vise; or pounded with a hammer. They were hanging around my neck on a lanyard, someone bumped into me with an umbrella, and the bridge snapped.

The warranty is only for one year, so I have to pay $75-100 to have them repaired. Because they’re titanium, most repair labs can’t repair them.

VSP customer service told me there’s nothing they can do about it. But they’re REALLY sorry. The guy actually told me his heart was sad for me. Seriously.

I think there’s something they can do: They can stop deceptive advertising or make an effort to live up to the claims they’re making.

So you’ll pay extra for supposedly indestructible glasses with no better warranty, with fewer options for repair, and at a much higher price!

    No more Flexon for me!

  • Anthony M DeSanti says:

I tend to use my own frames when I get my annual upgrade. Why isn’t there a better discount for those using own frames?

  • Jen Jones says:

How can I track the process of my glasses at your lab?

    • Angelina F. says:

      Hi Jen,
If you ordered your glasses from a location that is in the VSP network, you can call our customer care team at 800.877.7195 to check on the status.
